Of course there’s a lot of free information available online. I used Google, YouTube and other social media platforms to help find answers to questions I had. But the thing which is missed from this approach is that as a beginner you don’t know what you don’t know. Therefore, you don’t know the best questions to ask.

I had a little bit of knowledge from a course I did back in the early 2000’s and went off with high hopes only for them to be dashed to the ground! It wasn’t until 2014 when I found an affiliate mentor that things began to change for me. I wasn’t looking for a mentor, nor did I know how to find an affiliate marketing mentor. One of the first things I learned was to build an email list. Looking back now I am shocked at how little I actually knew. A digital product pays much more than a physical one in percentages of the sale value. A physical product from Amazon, for example, pays between 1% and 10% commission. Whereas a digital product pays between 30% and 40% commission. With a subscription based product I could earn recurring commissions from each sale.

With this information alone I made giant leaps in my affiliate business. What a lot of time I had wasted previously! Just these small points have made the world of difference to me as an affiliate:

A mentor, or community can give you support, direction, accountability and inspiration. Without it, you’re on your own. In fact, I’d go so far as to say you’re less than on your own because when and if you do reach out for support (from a family member or a friend), they are reluctant to understand your dilemma. In fact, they are more likely to talk you out of affiliate marketing altogether! Most people fear anything new and an entrepreneurial endeavour is cloaked with words such as “scam”, “pyramid scheme” and the like. Most of your friends would rather you were “like them” and got a nice, safe job.

So talking to a friend who isn’t an entrepreneur is likely not going to help you at all but rather hinder you. I soon discovered that I was better off going it alone than asking a friend for advice.

A mentor/coach is different. They have already committed to the entrepreneurial path and succeeded in it. So they know it can be done and see the pitfalls and hurdles before you come to them. There’s several pitfalls with affiliate marketing which you should be aware of. To be informed is to be forearmed of these potential problems. Here’s just a short list of some of them:

• Shiny object syndrome – the belief that the “magic bullet” exists and you only need to push a few buttons for success. This belief keeps you endlessly jumping from course to course but without ever gaining any traction in any direction before you’re on to the next course (shiny object).
• Being a busy fool – being a busy fool relates to the actions you carry out when working on your online business. For a long time I worked on pointless activities such as making my website look nice, when I had zero people finding it, for example. Focusing on activities which “move the needle” of your income should be a priority for affiliates.
• Getting stuck in learning mode. Initially you’ll be spending 80-90% of your time in learning mode. This is addictive and you can easily get caught up in this stage, endlessly watching more and more videos but never taking any practical action. Once you know something, shift to 80% action taking and 20% learning.
• Procrastination – finding your path as an affiliate can be hard. But it’s important to take action and make good habits out of doing so. Don’t get caught up in procrastination spending dead time procrastinating. Better to change your state of mind by taking a break and shifting focus.

Highs And Lows Of Affiliate Marketing

There’s definitely highs and lows of affiliate marketing and you’ll know it when you hit a low. This is where a good mentor can lift you out of your funk. A good mentor can inspire you to take even the smallest of actions, just to start building momentum again.

Affiliate marketing is going to be a challenge and so you need to be prepared for the difficulties when they come. Learn when to step away and look at the bigger picture but also to focus on taking tiny steps to build momentum.

When you have had enough, learn to rest, but never quit. Having a mentor and belonging to a community can give you the help and support you need when the chips are down. Affiliate marketing is also a very forgiving business and you can always start again, this time from a place of better knowledge and understanding.

Learn to “fail forwards” which means to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Only by “failing” will you learn anything. Sitting in your comfort zone will never bring you the results you desire.

So although it can take some time to learn how to make these sales initially, the work you put in will pay off many times once you figure it out!

If you choose to promote products which are hugely valuable and necessary, your members will keep their membership for a much longer time frame. While attrition is part of business, and some people will cancel their memberships of course, choosing the right products gives you a massive head start!

Physical products tend to pay less than digital ones: in general it’s around 1%-10% for physical products and 40-50% commission for digital products. But with high ticket affiliate marketing it’s a much better deal for affiliates, especially if the commission structure is right. Digital products are a good bet for affiliates too and typically pay a much larger percentage of the sale price. With your typical physical product, you can see what you’re getting quite clearly. But with a digital product the product can be more obscure. That’s why an affiliate selling a high ticket item such as an extensive online course (e.g. for $2500) would need to find, nurture and educate potential customers rather than going for the direct sale. 

This is usually done with a sales funnel and email follow up series which can be largely automated. Here’s a few high ticket online business coaching programs. They offer a range of services such as mentoring, one on one coaching and digital business setup and done for you systems.

As you can see from the commission structure, you can earn a larger proportion of the sale than you can from the sale of physical products. Another benefit of promoting a high ticket digital program like the one above is the recurring commissions you can earn from membership referrals. With recurring income products, you can even earn more, over time, than you could from a single sale of a high ticket product.

Let’s take the example of a high ticket item selling for $500 which pays 30% commission. You can earn a $150 commission on this sale. But it’s still a “one time” commission which you get paid only once. With a recurring monthly commission, you can ultimately earn a lot more from collecting subscription memberships. So even a $20 a month recurring income can give you a $160 payout over the course of 8 months.

Subscriptions add up too and once you’ve learned how to sell one membership product you can sell many more. Just 10 sales would give you a $200 a month income from a $20 a month commission; each and every month for the duration of your subscribers.

With a high value product members are more likely to maintain their membership for a longer period. Some products are needed for an online business to run. An example is Aweber, the autoresponder service. This pays out a recurring monthly income for referrals and since the product is vital for the operation of an online business, many customers will keep their membership for years.

There’s many advantages of using high ticket affiliate products and they are definitely a good idea for beginner affiliates especially. It can allow you to grow your business more quickly because you can more quickly get into positive cash flow.

With lower value products it’s more difficult using paid marketing and still coming out with a profit too. Paid marketing methods are far more scalable than free organic marketing methods such as blogging, for example, which can take a long time before you see the results of your efforts.

Now you might be thinking, hang on, no-one will buy this it’s far too much money! But you need to remember that with the internet you can sell to anyone globally. People do buy products like these, even if it is only millionaires who can afford them.

Going back to the previous example above which you’re selling for $100 (and making only $4 for your efforts), you’ll need to sell 3180 products at this amount to make the same amount as for your amphibious car sale!

So even though you might think selling a car like this is more difficult than selling a $100 product, it’s not going to be 3180 times as difficult. In fact, you’re going to be doing much the same amount of work to sell either product. Once you understand how to target a specific audience for affiliate marketing there’s not much difference in what you’ll actually do.

Another option to sell high commission affiliate products is to go after the sale of digital products. Digital products are great for affiliates because even a smaller valued product can pay you more than a larger valued physical product. That’s because physical products typically pay lower levels of commission – from 1% to 10% in most cases.

Digital products on the other hand pay much more per sale, from 20% – 40% commission. Take a look at this comparison and you’ll see what I mean. Here’s a high valued physical product on a site called Bowflex.com. Bowflex pays from 3% commission on sales generated by its affiliates while means you would earn only $74.97 on a sale of this treadmill (at 3%).

Now compare this to an online business course which sells for a similar amount. Below are a few online business packages for those wanting to build their own online businesses. They include mentorship, software, step by step processes and “done for you” systems and strategies.

The lowest priced product sells for $2,497 – similar to the treadmill. But look at the commission structures available. You can earn commissions from $500-$1000 for the sale of this product. The Best Of Both World’s

One of the best opportunities for selling high commission affiliate products is to choose to sell business tools, software products, mentoring and coaching courses. Most people don’t want to spend tens of thousands on a submarine, or a golf cart hovercraft. Those products will mostly be for millionaires! But far more people are willing to invest in their online business education, especially if it allows them to build a lucrative online business and escape their day jobs!

Selling digital products which help people do this is a great way to benefit from high commission affiliate products. There’s a greater market for it and you can earn some of the largest commissions available through selling other people’s products online.

But even with a high cost physical product you can earn a lot more than with a low cost one. Take this high end product for example:

The flying hovercraft sells for $190,000 and pays affiliates 8% commission. That’s a commission of $15,200 if you can sell one. Let’s Compare this to a $100 product from Amazon which only pays 4% commission. You only earn $4 per sale for the $100 product. So you’ll need to sell 3800 of them to earn the same amount as for the flying hovercraft.

While not many people are in the market for a flying hovercraft, (in fact considerably fewer people than might be interested in the $100 Amazon product), it illustrates an important point about affiliate marketing. It might be more difficult to sell the high end product, but it won’t be 3800 times as difficult! So it pays to find these kinds of products if you’re an affiliate.

Digital Vs. Physical Products

Digital products typically pay 30%-40% in commission from a sale. Compare this to the normal rate for physical products (1%-10%) and you see a massive difference. Digital products have far fewer costs attached to their sale. There’s fewer manufacturing costs, and no handling or delivery costs. You can access them over the internet for free. These savings are passed on to the affiliate marketers who refer them, since advertising takes up the largest costs of selling them.

So digital products pay more and therefore it’s a good idea to find high commission digital products which also carry a high cost and deliver a high value offering. High value digital products are things such as digital marketing training courses, online business support and mentoring, coaching and one on one affiliate marketing coaching.

Why Choose High Commission Affiliate Marketing?

Choosing high commission products can give you a head start as an affiliate for a number of reasons. With low value products, it’s much more difficult to use paid advertising because there’s less scope for profit. When you’re a beginner especially, you’ll be learning as you go. If your product only gives you a small commission, this limits your ability to test out advertising methods. If you only make $100 commission from a sale, you’ll need to spend less than that on advertising to come out with a profit. This is very limiting. But if your product gives you a $1000 commission, you’ve got a lot more room for experimenting.

Paid advertising gives you instant feedback too, and is easily scalable. With cheaper marketing methods such as blogging or content creation, you have to put in a lot of work upfront, and you won’t know how well your content is doing for some time. It’s also much more difficult to scale organic traffic through content creation.

High commission affiliate marketing is definitely a good idea if you’re going to become an affiliate. With a high ticket item, you still face the same challenges as other affiliates. But you can quickly recoup advertising budget and scale to a larger income more easily when you have a high commission affiliate program.

Studies show that most website visitors will need 6-8 touch points before they buy anything from someone online. On a website, this is difficult because most will leave without having bought anything, never to return. But if you can collect email subscribers from your website, it puts you in charge of the traffic. To earn traffic from content takes a lot of time and effort. Buying traffic is costly. So collecting email subscribers is the thing to do for those affiliates who are “in the know”.

With email marketing you can build trust over a much longer timeframe than is possible on a website. I’ve had subscribers make purchases through my affiliate links even years after they signed up to my list! That’s just not going to happen from a website alone!

When they build a successful business using the tools you referred to them, they’ll be a fan of it for life! And of course you’ll earn commissions for life if this happens!

As an affiliate you want your work to pay you as much as possible. Many affiliate products will only pay you once. That’s fine if you’re simply adding a banner to your website and not doing much work. But if you’re committed to being a full time affiliate marketer, you’ll want your work to count.

If you could do the same amount of work for a monthly income as you could for a $10 commission, you would right? Often with what amounts to the same amount of work, affiliates will bust a gut just to earn tiny commissions! This is exactly the mistake I made in my early days of learning affiliate marketing. I would write for months around a Clickbank product, hoping to get some traffic.

Then, eventually I would earn one single commission, of $40; for months of work! With a recurring income product, all the work is worth much more. You can make a similar sale and earn $20 a month, for life, with the right products and customers. It pays to work smart and use affiliate products with recurring commissions.

Recurring Commissions & High Ticket Commissions

Another consideration is to choose products which offer high value and therefore a high commission. See highest paying affiliate programs list for a number of high paying affiliate programs. The best paying programs are typically digital products. Physical products usually pay between 3% and 11% commission so you’ll need to sell very high priced products to earn top commissions.

For example Hammacher Schlemmer have an affiliate program and sell flying hovercrafts! 8% of $190,000 would give you a massive commission of $15,200! However, you’ll need to find someone who wants a flying hovercraft and is willing to spend that much on it! Those people are hard to find!

Other large ticket products have a more global appeal such as business related products which help people earn online. Recurring commissions and high ticket commissions are definitely worth considering if you’re starting out as an affiliate marketer. But there’s another option you can consider and it’s multi-tier commissions. With multi-tier commissions you get paid commissions based on sales made by your referrals. So if you’re in affiliate marketing for the long haul, it’s worth considering.

Once someone is making money from using business tools and affiliate programs, they are very unlikely to stop using that particular product. So choose tools and programs which offer recurring commissions, give huge value and are used with online businesses to help them grow.

As an affiliate marketing your job is to get products in front of customers to make sales. When this happens it’s magical, and it doesn’t sound like it should be so difficult. But if you’re an affiliate you know just how difficult and frustrating it can be.

I’ve been an affiliate for a good few years now having got into it back in the early 2000’s. I’ve definitely had my fair share of affiliate marketing problems over the years too. Here’s some of the main problems I’ve faced and how I’ve overcome them.

Affiliate Marketing Problems – Free Traffic

My first sale came from using Hubpages.com and I wrote a review article about some website building software I had bought. Someone found my article and I made a $40 commission on the sale! Whoopee I thought to myself, I’ve made it! But then, just crickets and tumbleweeds! I had hoped that this would be the first of many sales I made from writing articles.

I didn’t pin all my hopes on that one article and so carried on building websites and creating content. Unfortunately the strategy I was using was massively flawed. I was relying on Google to rank my content, rather than promoting it myself. Needless to say nothing happened.

Ranking Websites

This was a tough lesson and I nearly quit after building hundreds of websites which simply didn’t do what they were supposed to. I had bought yet another course (there were many) which taught me to build sites with keyword domain names in order to rank them on Google for their main keywords.

Pretty much all of my sites failed and didn’t get any traffic. So I spent months building all these sites and the results were pretty disappointing. It was a site called tedsheds.net and ranked for the search term “teds sheds” which I believe was a company name. It had a fair amount of traffic for that keywords, and very little competition. Which is why I managed to get a high ranking on Google and other search engines. But it soon dropped off and with all the work I had done, a handful of sales didn’t amount to much!

Affiliate Marketing Problems – “Buyer” Traffic

In the early days most of my affiliate marketing problems centred around not having any or enough traffic. I did get traffic eventually, but I was so desperate for traffic, I just got any old traffic. I threw up crappy websites which offered almost zero value and hoped they would “work”. My site Tedsheds.net got some passing traffic, but it was people looking for another company called teds sheds! So most of the traffic wasn’t buying traffic.

Then I built another website around the garlic harvesting topic. Whentoharvestgarlic.com was the name of the site as I recall! The goal was to rank my website at the top of Google, and get free traffic. I hadn’t thought much beyond this! Another affiliate marketing problem I encountered was the slow realisation that not all traffic is “buyer” traffic. Plus I hadn’t put much thought into how to monetise my garlic themed website.

I did rank this site at the top of Google for its main keywords (when to harvest garlic). But once you know when to harvest garlic, what are you going to buy? I didn’t think about this so tried to monetise with Google Adsense and some lowly paid affiliate program offering garlic and vegetable related products! It was doomed from the start!

Affiliate Marketing Problems – Ikigai

It was years later that I heard the term ikigai. Ikigai means “reason for being” roughly translated and is a Japanese term. It’s where your passion aligned with your vocation and you can make money from being “you”.

It was a solution to many of my affiliate marketing problems. Once I found my ikigai, I could focus on that rather than desperately trying everything, just to make money. This is one of the many affiliate marketing problems I had encountered. I was desperate for cash, so jumped around for years desperately “trying” everything and anything which could “work” – meaning make money.

Looking back at my garlic harvesting site I realised that I wasn’t aligned with my ikigai. I worked on the site for several months, building content. But I knew nothing of garlic harvesting, I had only chosen the topic because it seemed like a low competition keyword with a good amount of traffic – an “easy win”.

But after months of researching content before writing, I grew pretty weary of it and gave up on the site. Within a few months, it had fallen down the rankings and within a year it was gone! Another blogger took the top spot and was clearly a garlic growing enthusiast. Hence he could create videos and update his blog regularly from his huge database of knowledge on the subject. For me, working on the site was exhausting.

Making Money With Affiliate Marketing

Over several years I had learned several affiliate marketing strategies including niche website building, paid marketing, collecting emails through a landing page and several other skills. But I hadn’t really made any money. I had the odd affiliate sale here and there, but nothing really that was sustainable. The best success I had in the early days was promoting an affiliate marketing training courses by a guy called Peter Lexis. You can read more about his course in my digital profit course review.

This involved sending paid traffic from Adwords to a landing page and collecting emails. Then, I followed up with Peter’s pre-built email follow up series promoting his product. I made sale after sale!

I was getting pretty excited and about to increase my marketing budget when I got my Adwords platform shut down. Apparently I had broken some terms or something! I really didn’t know what I was doing. Back in 2010, or there’s about’s, if you got your account shut down, you didn’t get it back! I gave up for a while and just resigned to my day job.

Solutions

I still was desperate to escape the drudgery of working the many jobs I juggled to keep the wolf from the door; so I persisted down the affiliate marketing road. I bought several other courses before eventually finding an online mentorship company called The SFM Mentors.

I was sceptical of course since I had already bought so many courses and yet still struggling! But I was able to meet the founders of the company (Stuart Ross and Jay Kubassek) and many other members in actual live meet-ups (pre-pandemic).

I was also given much more support than with other courses and so persevered for several years (2014-present 2020).

By following other leaders in affiliate marketing, I was able to understand why I had had so many affiliate marketing problems over the years. Having coaches and mentors gave me more confidence in what I was doing and following a path which works.

I learned how to find products which gave me recurring commissions, rather than using low paying physical products which was what I had been doing. I made my first high ticket sale within a few months of joining the SFM too (not a typical result).

With a multi tier affiliate program, there is an incentive to help those you have referred to a program; since doing do will also be financially rewarding when they succeed. So, it’s good for to join multi tier affiliate programs for a couple of reasons:

• You can earn from sales made by your referrals, (when they start making sales through the same program).
• Your sponsor in the company (the affiliate who referred you) is more motivated to help you succeed than with a standard affiliate program which doesn’t offer multi-tier commissions.

Your “sponsor” isn’t, of course, obliged to help you succeed online with a multi tier affiliate program. But doing so will help their business grow.

Multi-Tier Affiliate Program – The SFM

The SFM Mentors (Six Figure Mentors) is an affiliate program and online education community which helps people build online businesses. The SFM business model has a number of advantaged over a basic affiliate product which only offers one commission opportunity:

• High ticket products – Join the SFM at Elite level and benefit from high ticket product sales and 40% commission.
• Recurring commissions – even at a basic membership level, you can benefit from recurring commissions through SFM’s digital product range. You can also earn 5% on some of the higher level products (and 40% at partner level)
• A product range – having a product range and a built in sales team means you can focus on just your front end marketing efforts and leave the high value sales to the team.

With a sales funnel which contains multi tier products, high value digital items and pays out large commissions, affiliates have much more scope for using paid marketing. With low valued physical products, affiliates will find it much more difficult to use paid marketing and still make a profit. In many cases, they’ll have to use free marketing strategies which are slow and time consuming.

But with paid marketing you can get traction with an online business quite quickly. You can also scale up much more easily with a paid marketing strategy. In terms of timescale of building a profitable online business with paid marketing compared to organic content marketing there’s a huge difference.
